Sony’s PS5 Update: New Features and Enhancements

Sony’s PS5 continues to evolve with the latest software update, bringing a range of exciting features and improvements for gamers. From enhanced audio capabilities to expanded storage options, this update is designed to enhance your gaming experience.

Dolby Atmos Support for Immersive Audio

One of the standout features of this update is the addition of Dolby Atmos support, enhancing the audio experience on compatible HDMI devices. Powered by Tempest 3D AudioTech, this feature allows you to enjoy 3D Audio in all its glory. Sony initially introduced this feature in a beta update back in August, and it’s now available to all PS5 users.

Expanded SSD Compatibility

For those in need of more storage space, the update introduces support for larger capacity M.2 SSDs. You can now use SSDs with a capacity of up to 8TB, doubling the previous limit of 4TB. Of course, compatibility requirements must be met, ensuring you have ample room for your ever-growing game library.

Assist Controller Functionality

Struggling with a challenging level or boss in your game? The new update allows you to assign a second controller as an assist controller. By doing so, your PS5 recognizes both controllers as a single device, providing the flexibility for either controller to take control of what’s happening on screen.

Social Features Enhancements

The update also enhances the social features of the PS5. When you receive an invitation to a closed party, you won’t be automatically added to the group, giving you more control over your interactions. Additionally, if someone in the party is sharing their screen, you’ll now have a preview of it before you join. Sending party invitations is now more convenient as well—you can send both closed and open party invitations to multiple players simultaneously. Under the Friends tab, you’ll also notice a “joinable” icon next to friends participating in activities you can join.

Streaming to Android TV OS 12 Devices

Expand your gaming experience by streaming PS5 or PS4 games to devices running Android TV OS 12. Sony has confirmed compatibility with the 4K Chromecast with Google TV and the BRAVIA XR A95L model smart TV. This feature opens up new possibilities for gaming on different screens throughout your home.

Voice Commands and Customization

In the US and UK, this update introduces new voice commands to enhance convenience. Simply say “Hey PlayStation, help” to quickly access help pages or “Hey PlayStation, what’s new?” to stay updated on the latest features and the current PS Plus lineup. Additionally, for those late-night gaming sessions when you want to keep things quiet, you can now mute the console’s startup and shutdown beep sound. Head to Beep Sound under System in Settings to adjust the volume or mute the beep.

Sony’s commitment to improving the PS5 experience is evident in this comprehensive update, catering to both gaming enthusiasts and those seeking more control and customization options. Enjoy the enhanced audio, expanded storage, and social features that make the PlayStation 5 an even more compelling gaming console.
