Mortal Kombat 1 has at last revealed the highly anticipated Jean-Claude Van Damme Johnny Cage skin, fulfilling a long-standing vision. However, this revelation came at the expense of series head Ed Boon, who endured a fiery ordeal while indulging in spicy wings during an appearance on the YouTube Q&A show, Hot Ones, hosted by Sean Evans of First We Feast. During the interview, Evans inquired about the “full circle moment” of incorporating Van Damme into the Mortal Kombat universe through Johnny Cage. Boon, already perspiring from the increasingly scorching buffalo wings, shared the origins of this significant addition.
Boon began, “When we—oh, man,” momentarily struggling with the fiery hot sauce that would later prove to be a formidable opponent as he and Evans ventured into the higher echelons of the Scoville scale. “When we created the very first game, our original intention was to develop ‘Van Damme: The Arcade Game.’ We aspired to see the name ‘Van Damme’ prominently displayed. We reached out to his representatives, expressing our desire to create a game inspired by Van Damme.” Jean-Claude Van Damme Jean-Claude Van Damme Jean-Claude Van Damme Jean-Claude Van Damme
He continued, “I’m not certain whether he declined or if it never came to fruition. But keep in mind, we were just a couple of 20-something-year-old enthusiasts eager to create a video game. I can understand how Van Damme might have responded, ‘No, we’re not doing this.’ We made several attempts to establish contact with him. This time, we hit the jackpot, and we secured his participation. We now have his voice, and he will be the Johnny Cage character. It truly represents a full-circle moment.” Jean-Claude Van Damme Jean-Claude Van Damme
